Stationery design competition to support autistic children

A stationery design competition organized by Shanghai Charity Foundation has been kick-started to support art education for autistic children.

Autistic children can take part in the competition, and winning designs will be turned into products whose sales will be used to feed further art education to those children, the foundation said on Friday.

One million yuan (US$160,000), half of which is sponsored by Shanghai M&G Stationery Co, has been pledged for the competition.

Besides autistic children who compete in a category reserved for them, all people between 7 and 35 years old can take part.

The competition accepts designs of any kind of stationery and also their packaging and patterns on them.

The entries will be rated by experts on their creativity, artistic features, functionality, safety and marketing potential, according to the organizer.

The official website for the competition, www.wjsjds.net, will be launched on March 28, and the deadline for submitting the designs is June 30.

Shen Li, headmaster of Changning District Special Vocational School which recruits children with autism, mental retardation and cerebral palsy, said all schools of this nature in Shanghai, about 10 of them, will be encouraged to take part in the competition.

“It’s our goal for the next five years to draw more companies to offer skill training courses to our students to tap their potential,” he said.

It’s estimated that there are about 230,000 autistic people above 14 years old living in Shanghai.
