Industry Profile: Leslie Chalfont, giddy paperie

Leslie Chalfont
giddy paperie, president and designer
Winter Park, Florida
Tell us a little about your business: Whether it’s your home, office or kitchen, we aim to bring art to your everyday. Inspired by our surroundings and favorite things in life, we hope to deliver a bit of humor and good cheer through our collection. My philosophy has always been two-fold: make art part of your everyday life, and send snail mail, because hand-written notes will never go out of style. I paint what I love from travel to nature and good food. Making art part of everyday life seems to guide our business.
What’s in a name? Tell us the story behind Giddy Papery: It’s actually based on a love story from another artist friend of mine who moved from Florida to Napa, and in the middle of her move, started dating “the Frenchman.” She travels back and forth a lot from California to France, and when she shared her story, I commented how happy she sounded. She then replied, “Leslie, I am just giddy!” The word jumped through the phone and just stuck. The name “giddy paperie” evokes the feeling we want others to have when they see our designs, or use our products. We aim to bring a little cheer to your everyday.
What are some of your favorite products right? Ah, I so love our new planners. Weekly agendas have been on the back burner for several years due to the large scope of the project. I had no idea the process is akin to writing a book given all the parts and pieces and series of edits. I equally love our calendar and new mugs.
What will take over stationery and paper shelves in 2016? For images, we have always loved the bee and have a few fun twists for the coming year. I love mixing classics in a modern manner, so expect to see pearls, ribbons and metallics presented in a fresh way. I also see the future of keepsake boxes to store all those notes, cards and treasures we love to keep. The monogram will be re-purposed too in fun and modern ways, everyone loves their own letters.
Why do you love this industry? It is filled with wonderful people at its core. Those who love to help and encourage, and those whom you can help and encourage. Beyond art and design, I love being part of life’s greatest celebrations from birthdays to weddings and holidays. Regardless of your personal style, you can find a designer to help create memories for your events and life’s celebrations. Our industry is always changing and intersects trends including color, icons and styles of art.
