Stationery Trend Q & A with Oblation Papers & Press
Oblation Papers & Press is a stationery shop, urban paper mill, letterpress printer all combined into one commonality; a passion for paper. Stationery Trends discussed some fun topics with Jennifer and Ron Rich, founders of Oblation Papers & Press.
Q. What are your three top-selling vendors?
A. Pilot, Exaclair, Traveler’s Company.
Q. What have you learned about running a stationery and gift business that’s surprised you?
JR: How many directions it is possible to take a paper company. International trade shows in Tokyo, London and Paris, entering the art materials market with handmade watercolor paper, the delighted customers who attend our in-store events … there are plenty of ways to continue to forge ahead as an entrepreneur, rather than resign yourself to maintaining what you once were excited about.
RR: (That) people keep coming and buying the stuff. It is completely unnecessary and a heck-of-a-lot cheaper at Target. I’m just glad they have disposable income and want to spend it here.
Q. If you were a stationery product, what would you be?
JR: I would be an Oblation Small Salutations blessings card, with a small, quiet message, plenty of space around the center, a little rough around the edges.
RR: Is a Rock Badger a stationery item?
Q. Best buy under $50?
A. We have a pencil bar, with pencils from around the world, $2-4 each.
Q. Best splurge?
A: Original Crown Mill Pure Cotton Correspondence Presentation Box, from Orange Art, $65 retail.
