Shells: The Book of Wonder wins 2019 Moonbeam Award

Shells: The Book of Wonder, released by Jumping Jack Press, was awarded the Gold Medal Moonbeam Award as the best children’s book of 2019 in the Book Arts/Pop-Up/Cut-Out category. Created by award-winning paper engineer, Yoojin Kim, and author Janet Lawler, the Moonbeam Gold medal is the second in a row for Jumping Jack Press and Kim, who claimed the 2018 Moonbeam Award in the same category for Leaves: An Autumn Pop-Up Book.

Jumping Jack Press, the pop-up book imprint of Up With Paper, has been a frequent recipient of medals from the Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards since their introduction in 2007. Founded on increasing recognition to exemplary children’s books, this award also celebrates and encourages lifelong reading throughout childhood.

“We are extremely proud of this achievement,” said Monika Brandrup, vice president and creative director of Up With Paper. “We try to bring our customers products that not only showcase our intricate pop-up concepts and designs, but are fun, entertaining, and, in the case of our pop-up book line, educational to read!”

Shells: The Book of Wonder shows the beauty of shells of all types, and also explains their importance to the environment of the oceans and beaches. Featuring massive pop-ups of turtles, hermit crabs, bundles of shells, and even a gigantic octopus, the reader can venture throughout the book to read interesting facts about not only shells, but the entire ocean itself, including on numerous interactive pull tabs.

The Shells book is the third of a four-book pop-up seasonal set from Jumping Jack Press, each of which has won the Gold Moonbeam Award upon release. Prior to the release of Leaves, Jumping Jack Press released Snowflakes, still its best-selling title, and will follow in 2020 with the release of Flora: A Botanica, Pop-Up Book.

Originally founded as PopShots, Inc., in 1978, Up With Paper has been recognized for design excellence more than 75 times with the International Greeting Card Association’s highest honor, the LOUIE Award, including the Card of the Year in 2005, 2017, and 2018. Up With Paper’s pop-up greeting cards, UWP Luxe trend-driven cards, and Jumping Jack Press pop-up books are available in thousands of specialty retail outlets throughout the United States and around the world.

All designs may be viewed on the company’s websites at www.upwithpaper.com and www.uwpluxe.com. Jumping Jack Press pop-up books are available to retailers through a distribution agreement with Ingram.
