The Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation donated school bags and stationery worth $2500 to two schools in Ono-i-Lau.

The 110 children from Onolevu District School and Doi Village School were all smiling as they received their new stationery last week.

Onolevu District School caters for the children of Matokana, Nukuni and Lovoni whereas Doi Village School caters for the children of Doi.

Women interest officer Eastern Wilisoni Qarasoni said the stationery were an essential and important part of the learning process for children to use in the classrooms and at home.

“It is important for the ministry because we want to continue to support the children in terms of educating the needy children in Fiji,” Mr Qarasoni said.

“The ministry has strengthened its awareness programmes on the need for everyone to work together to protect our children, to make sure that no child is left behind and to protect them from suffering any form of abuse or neglect.

“The assistance handed over to children is school bags and stationery-pencil, pen, books and coloured pencils.

“Most of the children’s school belongings were damaged by heavy downpour during Tropical Cyclone Gita.

He urged the children to work hard so that they could achieve their dreams in the future.

“The children are the leaders of tomorrow and they need to be encouraged to be told of their capabilities,” he said.

“These children can lift their living standards in the village,” he said.

Onolevu District School committee president Solomone Colati said the assistance from the ministry was timely.

“No students and teachers sustained injuries during the cyclone,” Mr Colati said.

“I am really happy that the children have their bags and school stationery because this means one less worry for the parents.

“Most of the parents were worried about sending their children back to school.”
