Shoppe Object postpones August event until October

Shoppe Object has postponed its fifth edition, previously set for August 8-10, to October 20-22, 2020. The show will remain at its downtown Manhattan location, Pier 36. The decision to push the curated biannual home and gift fair a couple of months later in the calendar year is a result of uncertainty related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the state of affairs for large gatherings in New York, as a consideration for developments in restrictions related to everyday life and travel both domestically and abroad, and as an organizational priority to keep the Shoppe Object community safe.

“Like the rest of the world, we are closely monitoring the progression of the COVID-19 pandemic and doing our part to act responsibly,” said Jesse James, co-founder of Shoppe Object. “While we had hoped to activate in August, we feel more confident about the possibility of producing Shoppe Object with a mid-Autumn date. It’s our hope that by then we will have moved into a safer period where we are able to gather with appropriate precautions in place, and an eye toward moving forward.”

Shoppe Object is coordinating with NY NOW in determining a postponed New York Market Week, with the two organizations cooperating to provide a robust and convenient city-wide experience to the home and gift market, culminating in Shoppe Object’s 5th edition. NY NOW will take place on October 18-20, and one overlapping day with Shoppe Object will provide retailers with the opportunity to safely engage with a wide-ranging swath of the home and gift market over the course of five days in New York.

“NY NOW’s role is to bring buyers and brands together safely in a spirit of discovery and unity. With that in mind, we are rescheduling our August event and will instead run a NY NOW Fall Edition in October,” said Tim Hart, SVP Retail, NY NOW. “We are pleased to coordinate our change of dates with the organizers of Shoppe Object so that buyers experience a robust and convenient Market Week in October. We will continue to monitor the progress of the COVID-19 pandemic and review our plans as required. It’s, of course, disappointing that our community will not be able to gather in August, but we look forward to coming together in October,” continued Hart.

The Shoppe Object team is working with its venue and production agency to establish new best practices for gathering in October, with plans to screen temperatures of guests, mandate the use of masks, and make adjustments to interactions on the show floor.
