Industry Spotlight: J Falkner

Jason Arbuckle, founder & creative director | Palm Beach, Florida.

Tell us your story: Stationery is actually my third act — and don’t they always say that one is the most satisfying? My first was book publishing in London, and my second was as a magazine art director in New York.  All along I have loved crisp, modern design and great paper.

When I started my company in Palm Beach, FL back in 2011, it was without any kind of business plan. My only thought was this: I’m only going to design cards I’d like to send myself, and let’s see if anyone else likes them, too.

Here we are seven years later, with stockists across the country, not to mention Canada and England. Which shows just how vibrant paper and stationery continues to be, with new voices making a success in the market all the time.

What’s your style? Our tagline is “made in sunshine.”We’re trying to put to paper that sense of pure happiness when the sun is shining in a perfect blue sky. We’re unafraid of color (because: Palm Beach!), but always presented in a simple, clean design. There’s so much visual noise in the world these days: our cards hope to be the antidote.

Do you have any surprise hits? Frankly, every hit is a surprise! It still feels like a great privilege to be making cards random strangers choose to buy. For a long time, I was convinced it was just friends and family picking them up! (And it’s true my mother is a big card buyer.)

What can we expect from you in the next year? We’ve had a terrific response to our luxury matchboxes, which just launched for Winter holiday. So much so we’ve already gone back to our manufacturer for more — twice! Expect new designs in this category in our January release, with playful motifs like dachshunds, lobsters and a super-chic coral pattern.

Who is your celebrity crush? Who didn’t fall for Harry and Meghan this year?
