Valentine’s Day greeting card sales to fuel record spending

As the second most popular seasonal holiday for sending greeting cards, Valentine's Day 2015 is projected to account for slightly more than $1 billion in Valentine's Day card sales as total spending for the holiday is anticipated to be a record $18.9 billion.

“Valentine's Day is second only to Christmas as the most popular holiday for sending greeting cards,” said Natasha Rankin, executive director of the Greeting Card Association. “It's a holiday that recognizes and celebrates love and encourages everyone to share their joy, thanks and commitment with others. Sending a Valentine's Day card is a wonderful way for people to connect with friends and loved ones all over the world,” she said.

Americans buy $6.5 billion greeting cards each year, generating retail sales of between $7 and $8 billion. While women buy an estimated 80 percent of all greeting cards, 56.8 percent of women and 45.7 percent of men buy Valentine's Day cards. The number of Valentine's Day cards expected to be exchanged this year is approximately 132-145 million cards (not including cards exchanged by students in classrooms).

However, when it comes to overall spending on Valentine's Day, men will spend almost double what women plan to spend, according to a Prosper Insights & Analytics survey of 6,375 consumers.

According to the survey, the average person celebrating Valentine's Day will spend $142.31 on candy, flowers, apparel and other items, up from $133.91 last year.

“Even in today's digital age, Americans continue to send Valentine's Day cards because they know greeting cards are a meaningful and heartfelt way to connect with others and express their thanks, love and support,” Rankin said.
